Like most modern factories, the Balakovo Steel Factory has a so-called closed-loop water system which means that water used in production processes circulates through the factory, and it is reused after some treatment. Some water evaporates during the cooling, and the system needs some water to be added.

River water is added from the water supply channel of the CHPP where the water intake pumping station is installed. Make-up water is supplied to the water treatment site for the treatment including clarification, mechanical cleaning, softening, disinfection and addition of reagents. Water treatment eliminates corrosion, salt deposition, precipitation, and microbial contamination of pipelines and mechanisms. Water entering the production facility is heated, next it flows back to the water treatment site for cleaning, reagent treatment and cooling. Hot water partially evaporates during the cooling process.

Fan cooling towers for water treatment are the first source of steam at the Balakovo SF. There is a lot of steam above the water treatment area in winter, when the steam/air temperature difference is highly noticeable.

This steam above the cooling towers is clearly visible even from afar. It is absolutely harmless, and it does not contain any impurities.
